Turning the Year: Welcome to Capricorn Season

On December 21st, we “turn the year.”
The solstice brings the longest night, the return of light, lengthening days, and the beginning of Capricorn season. It’s also the official start of winter. I always find it fascinating that the moment the light begins to grow is the same moment winter begins. It’s such a classic both/and: yes, a spark of new energy… and a reminder to settle in, steady yourself, and buckle up because winter has just begun!

Capricorn embodies this tension beautifully. Cool persistence. Practical achievements. The mythical seagoat who knows it can climb the mountain because it’s done it before! This cardinal earth sign reaches for the highest highs while staying rooted in reality, stability, and the kind of boundaries that quietly hold everything together.

Ruled by Saturn, Capricorn season slows the pace. It’s intentional. Measured. Respectful of legacy, tradition, and the long arc of time.

Wherever Capricorn lives in your chart, you may feel a honing of focus: a need for limits, structure, or a sense of “let’s get things cleaned up and sorted out.” Maybe you’re creating order after Sagittarius season’s expansive chaos. Maybe you’re setting boundaries for your energy or your finances. Maybe you’ve chosen a goal that’s calling for real commitment.

Whatever it is, this season loves diligence and rewards patience. Trust the slow burn and the payoff waiting down the road.

January Moons + Transits

Full Moon in Cancer — January 3rd
This moon brings a reminder that we’re safe, secure, and at home within ourselves. With aspects to Jupiter in Cancer and Saturn + Neptune in Pisces, it’s a deeply watery moon — emotional, fluid, intuitive. And with multiple planets in Capricorn, you may feel your emotions held in a gentle container: reflective, grounded, aware of where you’ve been and what you’re building.

New Moon in Capricorn — January 18th
If you’re into resolutions or annual planning, this is a great time for it! The Sun and Moon join Mercury and an exalted Mars in Capricorn — grounded communication meets skillful action, precision, and an extra hit of earthbound momentum. It’s a powerful moment for plans you truly want to stick.

There’s a flurry of transits in late December and through January, mostly activating the areas of your chart ruled by Capricorn, Pisces, and Taurus. Peek at those houses to see where the action is unfolding. If you want help orienting to your chart, you can always book a reading or ask a Burning Question session.

And one last note: Neptune is wrapping up its 14-year stay in Pisces. A cycle of dreamy idealism is giving way to dream-into-action. Put the finishing touches on your dreamiest dreams so you’re ready to go when Neptune enters Aries on January 26th.

Seasonal Gifts…

A Somatic Practice for Capricorn Season

Capricorn energy lives in the bones, the spine, the long arc of endurance. It’s the part of us that stands up straight even when the road is steep. Here’s a simple practice to help you drop into that steadiness:

Spinal Stacking + Grounded Breath (5 minutes)

  • Sit or stand and feel your feet or seat make contact with the ground.

  • Slowly “stack” your spine vertebra by vertebra, as if you’re building a column of support beneath you. No rigidity — just quiet, intentional alignment.

  • Once you feel tall, inhale as if the breath is traveling down your spine into your legs.

  • Exhale as if releasing excess tension from the back body and shoulders.

  • Let your jaw soften. Allow your weight to settle.

  • Notice the subtle sense of containment and clarity that arrives when your body remembers it can hold you.

This practice mirrors Capricorn’s superpower: structure that supports, not restricts.

Capricorn Reflection Questions

If you want to journal, meditate, or just let your mind wander around the season’s themes, try sitting with:

  • Where am I craving more structure so I can actually relax into myself?

  • What long-term goal feels worth the slow, steady work?

  • What boundaries (energetic, financial, emotional) support my well-being right now?

  • What legacy am I quietly shaping through my everyday choices?

  • Where do I feel the tension between “returning light” and “deep winter” in my own life?
